Nylon sutures are the generally accepted modern standard.
Silk is much easier to use for the inexperienced and while the risk of infection is, technically, higher, in reality it is a matter of only a few percentage points and the risk is offset by other factors in these circumstances, in my opinion and that of my medical advisors.
